People say I look just like Stubb and I guess I should because he is my grandfather. I grew up eating and loving grandpa’s BBQ and listening to him sing the blues, both in his restaurant in Lubbock, TX and in his Cadillac. Grandpa loved his Cadillac and used it to deliver BBQ to whoever was hungry or wanted some of his good cooking.
He gave me my first job when I was 12. While the other kids were out riding bikes in the hot West Texas sun, I was learning the secret to grandpa’s sauce. Back then, he hand bottled the sauce, carefully adding the label and stickers personally. My job was adding the red electrical tape on the cap to seal the bottle. And yes, it was electrical tape, just like you would find at the hardware store. My favorite touch on the bottle was my grandpa’s sticker of “Love & Happiness.” One of my favorite songs today is “Love & Happiness.” It reminds me of those summer days with Stubb with him singing along while he made his famous sauce.
