I recently took a trip out to California to promote Stubb’s. While I was there I had the chance to meet a great friend of my grandpa, Mr. Russ Parsons. Russ works in LA now, but he met my grandpa in the late 70’s when he worked in Lubbock.
I meet people all the time that have crossed paths briefly with my grandpa. With Russ, it was different. He hadn’t just met Stubb; he spent a lot of time with him. He shared some great stories with me about his times with my grandpa.
One was about how he came to work at Stubb’s first restaurant. One day while Russ was eating at the restaurant, it became very busy. Stubb needed some help, so he asked Russ for a favor. Since Russ was a regular at the restaurant, this became an ongoing request anytime it was busy– and he did it free of charge! Now that’s a true friend.
Russ was also kind enough to give me a few things he had collected over the years, everything from pictures to newspaper articles, drawings and more. One picture he gave me was a picture of Stubb and Earl Campbell. This is kind of funny, because I can’t count the number of times that I have had someone ask me “Is that Earl Campbell on the bottle?” I am not sure if Russ is reading this, but if you are, I just want to say ‘thanks’ again for everything!!
