Robert Earl Keen was the headliner for the Busby Foundation’s annual Lonestar Crawfish Boil held recently at Stubb’s Bar-B-Q in Austin. The Busby Foundation provides support to Central Texas families afflicted with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease).
REK put on a great show for a great cause. He is quite the storyteller, spinning tales in an easy, relaxed groove. The crowd was very tuned in to this Texas original, singing along to nearly every song.
I attended the fundraiser with Bob Pearson. Bob runs WCG, a leading social media and interactive communications company based here in Austin. In one of life’s strange circular twists, Bob was instrumental in launching Rilutek back in 1995, around the time REK was releasing Gringo Honeymoon. Rilutek is still the only approved drug to treat ALS, which shows just how nasty and difficult this disease its. Let’s hope more progress is made soon. Hats off to Robert Earl Keen and the Busby Foundation for keeping the spotlight on ALS.
